When us college kids were laying in bed watching Netflix, or out making liquor infused mistakes during the year of 2013, pop culture icons were busy creating crazy moments for us to remember during the first few days of the upcoming 2014. Ahead is a list of the best pop culture moments of 2013!
And the Oscar goes to…
Last year, this year, and probably the next decade will be the year of Jennifer Lawrence. The world’s love for her only increased when she fell up the stairs looking like a beautiful Disney Princess to accept her Oscar for Best Actress in Silver Linings Playbook. I mean, who else can make tripping look like an ad for the Dior gown that JLaw was wearing?
‘Charm City’ takes home a Super Bowl win
Since this blogger was born and bred in Baltimore, it’s no surprise that I have to list the moment when the Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XVLII. What made the day even better was when Beyonce was the fiercest thing ever, besides Ray Lewis, when she performed at half-time.
Disney starlets grow up in Springbreakers
LOL at all you people who thought this movie would be a saccharine sweet movie about girls finding a hunky surfer dude in Florida and living happily ever after. I for one thought it was pretty awesome when resident Disney and ABC Family good girls Vanessa Hudgens and Ashely Benson shed their innocent personas for a more grown up role.
The Harlem Shake that shook the world
So apparently it was a thing for a bunch people to dance in masks and other strange clothes to the song “Harlem Shake” by Baauer. This was so big that it even had the Terps of UMD dancing.
The Amanda Bynes Breakdown
No more perky Amanda from our favorite Nickelodeon show The Amanda Show. Instead, our once revered child star had an emotional breakdown all while wearing a blue wig.
Royal babies are born
June brought the birth of Kim Kardashian’s and Kanye West’s hairy, yet beautiful little nugget North West. But who cares about that soon-to-be spoiled kid, when Prince George was born across the pond in July to the most beautiful people in the world: Kate Middleton and Prince William.
‘Batfleck’
While Ben Affleck had an amazing February winning an Oscar and all, his summer wasn’t too hot when the Internet nerds revolted at the idea of Affleck playing Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel 2.
The Hills Alternate Ending
Remember when Brody said goodbye to Kristin and then MTV showed us the set it was filmed on? Well, MTV wanted to mess around with our hearts some more and showed an alternate ending of LC and Brody in the last show of the series. I guess it’s all really over now.
Orange is the New Black becomes our favorite show
Summer was the time for Netflix Original Series, and this show about inmate Piper Chapman soon became the talk of Netflix binge watching.
Hannah Montana is dead
So, how about those VMAs this past August? In case you forgot, this was the epic night when Miley Cyrus twerked up against Robin Thicke in her nude colored latex bikini with her blonde hair nubbins.
N’SYNC Reunion
Our favorite frosted tipped boys reunited at the VMAs to give us all a memory of our childhoods from the 90s. Sorry not sorry if you were more of a Backstreet Boys fan.
Breaking Bad ended
The world literally stopped turning when this AMC television classic ended with our favorite Walter White dying in a meth lab.
And the sexiest man alive is . . .
Adam Levine, basically the only relevant part of Maroon 5. There’s no wonder why his bad boy physique and demeanor landed him in People Magazine.
Beyonce surprised us all . . . in our sleep
In the middle of the night on December 13, Beyonce released a new self-titled album without any promotion or press of any sort. Only Sasha Fierce herself could accomplish anything this amazing.
Testudo was set aflame
Ok, so this is a bit partial to our UMD readers, but it was still incredibly memorable. Social media went crazy when reports of UMD’s bronze rendering of their mascot Testudo was caught on fire in the dead of night during Finals Week. Don’t worry though, the next day fellow Terps offered up Band Aids and Neosporin for the slightly charred hero.
Here’s to the crazy moments of 2013 and to the hopefully crazier moments of 2013! Comment below and share with the rest of Unwritten’s readers the other memorable moments of 2013.
