The 88th annual Oscars host, Chris Rock, opened up the award show this year with a moving and hysterical speech. In addition to highlighting black violence, and poking fun of Kevin Hart – Rock addressed the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in a span of hilarious one-liners that also spoke the truth.
Here are the best 10 one-liners from Chris Rock’s opening monologue:
- “I counted at least 15 black people on that montage”
- “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna panties. It doesn’t make sense because I wasn’t invited.”
- “To solve the problems, let’s have black categories like ‘best black friend‘ “
- “Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right hollywood is racist…. it’s sorority racist. We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa.”
- “There are things that happen in Star Wars that are more believable than Rocky.”
- “One of the biggest snubs… my favourite actor in the world is Paul Giamatti… last year he was whooping Lupita, this year he is crying at Easy E’s funeral, now that’s range”
- “We want opportunity. We want the black actors to get the same opportunities, that’s it.”
- “Leo gets a great part every year … what about the black actors?”
- “Another big thing tonight, is that you’re not allowed to ask women what they’re wearing anymore. You have to ‘ask her more’ … they ask the men more because the men are all wearing the same outfits.”
- “You want diversity, we got diversity. Welcome Emily Blunt, and somebody even whiter, Charlize Theron”
Chris Rock addressed the controversy surrounding the Oscars in a hilarious but truthful way that had my eyes and ears glued to the screen. If this is the opening, I can’t wait for the rest of the show. Stay tuned as Unwritten keeps up with the Oscars.
