Everyone has experienced it – that moment when you look at your closet and realize that the article of clothing which you had expressed so much disdain and disgust over, has now become a staple item in your wardrobe. From skinny jeans, to UGG boots, and even Juicy Couture tracksuits, we’ve all had instances where we’ve become traitors to our convictions for the sake of fashion and being chic. 2016’s fashion trends are no exception to this experience. While the thought of wearing black stretchy pants (aka leggings) in public was once revolting, it’s now become a classic look. Here are some items that we once hated but now wear almost everyday:
Adidas
While we once viewed Adidas sneakers as being on par with Sketchers (or maybe even Crocs), today the All Star and Stan Smith sneakers have become a staple item for cool girls everywhere. Although it might seem a tad bit off-putting to sport a shoe that you deemed popular in middle school, it’s undeniable that the Sneaker Invasion is real and Adidas are here to stay.
Turtle Necks
Normally when a piece of clothing reminds you of a soccer mom, it’s safe to say it’s not on the cutting edge of fashion. However, the recent reintegration of 1960’s fashion into today’s wardrobes, has made turtlenecks both trendy and practical – a rare combination to find. Best worn in neutral colors, turtlenecks are a versatile item to add flavor to any outfit.
Skorts
The jury is still out on how much of a “trend” this really is, but it’s safe to admit we all have a bit of a girl crush on anyone who can pull off a skort. While the re-emergence of the skort harkens a wave of nostalgia to pre-school and uniforms, when done correctly it’s impossible to hate. The skort has gotten a makeover with a-symmetrical folds over the skort in lieu of the normal fabric flap. Sport it with your turtleneck and you’ll have everyone in awe.
Overalls
Once again, this piece of clothing incites a certain level of nostalgia for our more carefree days. While this is a new contender in the world of everyday fashion, it’s a force to be reckoned with. There are many variations on this look – including classic overalls, overall shorts and the overall dress. The possibilities are seemingly endless. Still a hater? Throw a sweater over it to make look like you’re just rocking a normal jean skirt or pants.
Ponchos
As the blanket scarf quickly emerges as a staple in everyone’s wardrobe, ponchos are also coming back with a bang. Mixing comfort and tastefulness , it’s almost undeniable that wearing a poncho is like wearing a blanket and who really wants to ever leave bed? While blanket scarves are still the alpha when it comes to wearing your bed linens outside, the poncho is definitely the second in command. Long gone are the memories of plastic rain ponchos. Hello chic winter wear.
Jeans and sneakers
While this isn’t necessarily a piece of clothing, the ensemble of jeans and sneakers was definitely one that was much abhorred until recently. Partly because it gave us flashbacks to awkward middle school dances, and partly because it veered into the realm of too much comfort. Now the epitome of the style, this ensemble is a daily go to when you don’t know what to wear.
While trends and fads may come and go, let’s just hope none of these clothes find themselves in the realm of our former fashion faux pas, like Sketchers and those rhinestone LimitedToo tanks. Fashion is fortunately ever evolving, so although we might detest some looks today, who knows, they could be the thing you can’t live without tomorrow.

I feel like I look weird in turtle necks because my neck is so short but I love the trend!
