As a lover of fashion, I always tell my girlfriends that they do not have to buy that $100 “vintage” jacket from Zara. Instead, I always tell them to opt for jackets found in thrift stores or flea markets. There’s an element of romance in purchasing goodies, especially clothing, in flea markets or thrift stores. I like the idea of going to a market early in the morning on a Sunday, and browsing through clothing on the racks on each vendor stand. These clothes have been worn by people at different moments of their lives, each with a story to tell. There’s history and life in vintage clothing that no new and unworn clothes will ever have. And that’s why they are so special and worth investing in. Plus, their styles are very different and rich, seeing as they have been around for a long time and at different times in fashion history. So, here are 6 vintage items I believe every girl needs to invest in:
1. Pumps
These are very comfortable shoes, and the height of the heels are not at the point where your feet are killing you! These shoes could be easily styled with any type of clothing, and could be worn when you’re dressing up or down! I have seen pumps with very elegant and unique designs, so these heels could definitely be a statement piece.
2. Slingback shoes
Okay, since I talked about court shoes, I would like to shed some light on slingback shoes. If you have not seen Salvatore Ferragamo’s slingback heels circa 1950’s, then you have not lived my friend. Even Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe wore them! Chanel’s modernized take on the slingback heels makes me want to die and go to shoe heaven! These heels could literally be paired with anything, and your outfit will look laid back and chic.
3. Gloves
Before I saw the Rag and Bone gloves, I would have never thought that gloves could make an outfit. But the vintage-looking black gloves with a v-cut shape at the wrist made me think twice! Truly in love with the idea of wearing gloves, even with a dress, like the way the ladies did back in the day! There is an aura of sophistication, romance and mystery to a woman who wears gloves.
4. Classic style purses
Classic style purses are my favourite because it just seems to put together an outfit These styles are often associated with the Chanel style bags with their famous chain strap. However, satchels are also seen as a very fashionable piece, and when styled properly, could become a statement piece for your outfit!
5. Military jackets
If you have one of these bad boys, you have invested in the right clothing piece because whatever outfit you put this with, you will always look good. There is something raw and edgy about it that makes you look totally badass. And I’m not just specifying it to the basic green army jacket, but also the navy jacket circa 1920’s or the air force jackets! I saw many various military jackets at my local flea market!
6. A-line dresses/skirts
Spicing up your A-line dresses or skirts could be done by buying vintage ones! I especially like the 1920’s style because it looks very feminine. I always wanted to look like a femme fatale, and when I bought myself a 1920’s A-line dress and put red lipstick on, I totally felt like one! I felt like I could get any guy I wanted, and felt so beautiful. So, I recommend a vintage A-line dress or skirt!
Buying vintage clothes makes me super happy and beautiful. If there is one thing I want people to get out of this list it is that whatever you buy, you should definitely feel beautiful in it. Plus, vintage clothes are so much more powerful because of the stories behind them. I’m always wondering if the girl who wore my 1920’s A-line dress wore it for a date or if she met her soul mate in it. Totally cheesy, I know. However, I feel like I’m part of the history these clothes were a part of. And that’s something worth investing in. Now, you get to have your own story in these clothes.
