There’s nothing better than an escape from day-to-day monotony and summer is the perfect time for tropical trips and some much-deserved R ‘n R. But going on vacation can also bring up some old anxieties. Going away means leaving the comforts of our fitness routine and falling down a “treat yo self” rabbit hole. It doesn’t have to be this way. Here are a few tricks to keep you on a healthy path without sacrificing all the indulgences your vacation has to offer.
1. Water, Water, Water.
I can’t stress enough how important water is! Not only will it keep you hydrated in the intense summer heat, it will also keep you fuller for longer. This means that you won’t be constantly snacking throughout the day and night. Drinking water consistently throughout the day will keep you feeling fresh, light, and help your skin achieve that dewy glow we spend so much money trying to achieve with Sephora products.
2. Exercise.
Exercise doesn’t have to be a punishment. In fact, it should be another fun part of your vacation. Look into local activities at your resort or in the town you’re staying in. Renting a bike is a great way to sight-see and check out your surroundings while also giving you a nice workout. And of course, swimming is the most fun summer workout you can do. Look into local things you can’t do at home, like open water kayaking or mountain climbing. Carve out a small amount of time each day for some blood-pumping me-time, but make sure it’s enjoyable.
3. Embrace summer produce.
The best part about eating in the summer is the arsenal of fresh produce at your disposal, so take advantage! Strawberries, cherries, peaches, and watermelon are all delicious options that are healthy, filling, and, best of all, sweet as can be. Big salads that are full of fruit, nuts, and vegetables are wonderful lunch options that are satisfying for your taste buds and won’t weigh you down. Eating food like this will keep you full and energized for the rest of day. Make sure you keep an eye out for local farmers markets!
4. Indulge without guilt.
Don’t feel that just because it’s a vacation you have to go nuts when it comes to eating. It’s easy to fall into the “last supper” mentality. “I’m on vacation so I’m going to stuff myself with all the food I never let myself eat at home!” Not only will this negatively impact your wellness routine, you probably won’t be feeling too good afterwards, which will make your vacation a lot less fun. But it’s also important to allow yourself the pleasure food gives you. Listen to what your body tells you. Indulge when you want to indulge and don’t feel guilty.
5. Have fun.
The most important thing to remember while you’re on vacation is to relax and enjoy it. If you’re constantly stressing about how much you’re eating and what you look like you’re doing yourself a great disservice. Going on vacation is all about fun and relaxation and it’s not fair to yourself to spend even a second of it miserable or anxious.
Continuing a healthy lifestyle while you’re on vacation is great because it keeps you feeling your best, which allows you to have enough energy to truly get the most out of your time away. Just make sure you’re finding a healthy balance. Don’t restrict too much. Let yourself enjoy that ice cream cone (or 4) and then hop back into the water to frolic it off!
