Growing up, I lived for Christmas. I loved everything about the holiday season: the lights, the snow, the smells, the cheer, and of course, the presents. As I get older, though, bigger priorities have taken hold in my life and I just don’t have it in me to get into that Christmas spirit anymore. Once living my life as Buddy the Elf, I’ve now found myself associating myself with the Grinch himself. Growing up is realizing that you are no longer Buddy, but the Grinch instead. While watching my annual viewing of How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey, I realized this.
1. When you can’t find anything to wear, despite owning a full closet of clothes:
2. When it’s hard to love yourself sometimes:
3. When you look at the people around you:
4. When you just need to have some “me” time:
5. When you know that you should *probably* interact with someone other than your cat:
6. When there’s nothing to do so all you do is eat, eat, eat:
7. When sometimes there’s nothing better than a nice pity party:
8. When you thought dating *might* be a good idea:
9. When you randomly remember something embarrassing you did in 2007:
10. When you’re trying to sleep at a reasonable time and the neighborhood youths are making a ruckus:
11. When you watch someone else get what you worked so hard for (because welcome to adulthood):
12. When your idea of a nice Friday night is staying in and talking to no one:
13. When adulthood can be so grueling that you feel like you’re losing your mind:
14. When your procrastination game is so strong, that you remember the things that needed to be done immediately before they needed to be done:
Watching the Grinch as an adult easily feels like some eerie foreshadowing. As a child, I’d laugh because he was always so grumpy, unbeknownst to me that that’s what adulthood holds. Now that I’m older, I feel like I can relate to the Grinch on a personal level. Life doesn’t have to be this way! The Grinch learned how to grow out of it and so can you! Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.
