Looking for a good mystery/drama that you don’t want to be able to put down? Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty is your next cup of tea! With a mixture of Desperate Housewives and a really good Hallmark Channel movie, it is one of those books that keeps you on the edge of your seat and guessing the entire time.
Big Little Lies starts out in the present day – A murder has happened. You are thrown right into the madness of the cops trying to figure out what has happened, the parents telling their side of the story, and how some of the lies begin to unfold. And then witnesses take you back to the beginning, where all the characters are introduced and the turmoil begins to unfold.
The main premise of the Big Little Lies is to show the lies that these people tell in this small town to make their lives seem better than they actually are. While it looks like most of these families are rich and full-functioning, when you take a closer look you see that everyone has their dark secrets that they have to hide in order to keep up an image. It is all about the image to these families.
An interesting part of the Big Little Lies – It jumps character perspectives. Books like this are always a little more thrilling to see all of the characters different perspectives on the situation versus just seeing one main character tell the story. Just when you think you have started to figure out one of the characters, another one gives you a different image that makes you question who that person really is. It is like an endless game of Clue, that all ends in a murder.
A good spoiler – The ending is so fitting! It is as if karma finally take revenge and it leaves you so satisfied with the outcome! It is one of those books that you will not be able to put down, as well as look back on and enjoy the thought that was put into it. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat.
While I am always a fan of the reading the book before seeing it on screen, I know some of you out there are just not that invested in the written word. If you would prefer to spend that much time with your head in a book, you, my friends are in luck! HBO recently released a mini-series adaptation of the book and it is up to par! The TV series has some big names involved: Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and those are just the ladies! So far it has followed along with the book and the actresses/actors have done an excellent job with their roles!
Whichever way you prefer to get into Big Little Lies is fine by me, but make sure you check it out!
