Taylor Swift’s new album, Reputation, finally dropped today, and let me tell you, expectations were sky high after so many red-hot recent hits from the artist. I’ve never described myself as a Tay Tay fan, in fact, until now I’d probably have listed just a couple of her tunes as guilty pleasures. Not that I have anything against her, it’s just never been the kind of music I’m super into, until now. Despite sky-high standards set by the singles that preceded the full set, Reputation does not disappoint, on any front. It’s just hit after hit, and if I could get any of them out of my head, I’d try to find fault, but legitimately, I just can’t.
The thing is, Taylor Swift, in my eyes has always been someone who teen girls filled with angst aspire to. I’ve not considered her such a freaking talented songwriter. But she deserves to be number 1 in the iTunes album chart just hours after this dropped, because the truth is, it is that good.
Here’s some of my favourite lyrics from the album that make me relate to Taylor in a way I didn’t think I ever could…
“You’re so cool it makes me hate you so much” – Gorgeous
“I guess I’ll just stumble on home to my cats” – Gorgeous
“I’m laughing with my lover making forts under covers” – Call It What You Want
“My baby’s fly like a jet stream, High above the whole scene” – Call it What You Want
“I bury hatchets but I keep a map of where I put ’em” – End Game
“Feeling so Gatsby for the whole year” – This is why we can’t have nice things
“And you move to me like I’m a Motown beat” – King of my heart
“so I play ’em like a violin” – I did something bad
“Is it chill that you’re in my head?” – Delicate
“I’m spilling wine in the bathtub” – Dress
“Lord, save me, my drug is my baby, I’ll be usin’ for the rest of my life” – Dress
“But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time” – Look what you made me do
Rumour has it that a number of the crushing lines from the album are directed at Kanye West, but frankly, they’re the bomb dot com so I’m not too worried about how she came to create them. When your work burns this bright, you don’t need to justify or explain it. Kudos Tay Tay, I’ll be singing along for days (okay, weeks).
