Have you ever craved someone so much that you agonize over every small conversation, sober or not? It’s easy to get caught up with people who want you to spend the night but don’t actually want you there when they wake up. Sometimes you find yourself almost begging them in small gestures to let you stay just one time. You’re so convinced that if they let you stay the night then maybe, just maybe, they’ll want you. By the time we realize these people aren’t going to stick around the bed is cold and the sheets are a mess.
Here’s a poem I wrote about a close friend of mine who always seemed to find herself walking home the morning after, alone, desperately trying to understand why the boy she wanted never wanted her the morning after.
You like to tell me how you hate all the ways I’m not enough for you
Then whisper in my ear saying ‘baby, please don’t go…’
And every time I say I’m gonna leave ‘cause nothing you ever say is true
I’m head over heels and can’t seem to say no
I’ve been scared of even thinking about what we are,
You pull me in then push me away…
Why don’t you just ask me to stay?
Instead of leaving before the morning comes
Roll over to an empty bed silhouetted by the stars
I’m sorry for filling you with beer and bad ideas of me,
Thought maybe after a couple of drinks you would realize…
That baby, you and me could make a sweet melody.
Fall back into the sheets and lose track of time staring into your eyes.
You can put the same song on repeat…
And listen to it until we both fall asleep,
baby, you and me.
Will you tell me when those drinks start to kick in?
I’m looking to spend the night with you, maybe wake up in your arms.
You say you don’t do “just me,” but after a couple, you give in.
End you end your night off with a little dose of me…
Cause I don’t mean you any harm
Baby, come stumblin’ into my bedroom
We can talk for hours maybe even exchange a secret or two.
I don’t mind that your words are slurred cause your eyes shine so bright,
Wanna spend these moments wrapped up in you, make them last every night.
Cause I’m too head over heels and can’t seem to say no.
I’m sorry for filling you with beer and bad ideas of me,
Thought maybe after a couple of drinks you would realize…
That baby, you and me could make a sweet melody.
Fall back into the sheets and lose track of time staring into your eyes.
You can put the same song on repeat…
And listen to it until we both fall asleep, baby, you and me.
I’m head over heels and can’t seem to tell you no.
Baby, whisper in my ear and tell me not to go…
Wanna wake up to you the morning after.
Yeah, wanna wake up to you the morning after.
