It’s difficult to stay in the positive when our days get dark. Sometimes we are barely able to keep our head above water, let alone climb out of the rushing river. One thing that has helped me has been to keep some positive or reassuring quotes around me for the days when I’m feeling less than amazing. If you are feeling down or even just want a quick pick-me-up, here’s just a few quotes to get you moving towards the positive and why I personally love them so much.
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” –Eleanor Roosevelt
Why I Love This Quote: I struggle with self-esteem and fear of judgement from others constantly in my life. This quote always helps me remember that it isn’t the words or thoughts of others that determine my worth, that’s my job to do that.
“Surround yourself only with people who are going to take you higher.” –Oprah Winfrey
Why I Love This Quote: It has taken most of my life to realize that the people you surround yourself with can really make or break you at times. There are so many people in this world, so why allow ourselves to be dragged down by others?
“You are imperfect, you are wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” –Brene Brown
Why I Love This Quote: As a recovering perfectionist, I constantly need reminders that it is okay to be less than perfect, that it’s human to be imperfect. I also have convinced myself that I don’t deserve to be loved, so this quote helps me remember that no matter what has happened, that I do deserve love just as much as anyone else.
“If you’re always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” –Maya Angelou
Why I Love This Quote: “Fitting in” is a common struggle for most people, especially women. It’s important to remember that we all are unique and amazing in our own ways (I often forget this).
“It’s never overreacting to ask for what you want and need.” –Amy Poehler
Why I Love This Quote: I constantly fear asking for help, and when I do, I tend to immediately apologize for it. It doesn’t make any of us lesser people to admit we need help, it makes us human. Also, some of the best bonding experiences can come from allowing others to help you! We can find strength in numbers and learn to lean on each other, to be vulnerable and to connect.
“What a wonderful thought it is that some of the best days of our lives haven’t even happened yet.” –Anne Frank
Why I Love This Quote: My struggle with mental illness often leaves me having severe suicidal thoughts, making me think that there is no possible reason to continue to live. Regardless if you have suicidal thoughts or just find yourself stuck in a bad day, it is important to remember that there’s always a new day waiting for us, that there will be good in the future waiting for us to get there.
Quotes and positive affirmations have been a life raft for me on days when I’ve found myself drowning. Though some of the best phrases don’t always come from people who are famous, (in fact, I have quite a few from dear friends, too) it’s always good to have a few in your pocket or nearby to add into your arsenal of positivity. We all go through hard times as humans, but together we can make it through the storms and enjoy the sunshine again soon.
