July 4th, also commonly known as Independence Day here in the United States of America, celebrates our independence from the British Crown. However, over the course of 242 years, we the people have found a way to perverse the very nature of the holiday and turn it into an excuse to drink.
Most of us spend our July 4th amongst friends and family ringing in the glorious of day of freedom. Could you imagine what our lives would have been like if we had stayed “British” longer?
I digress.
With July 4th celebrations comes the opportunity to booze it up. Whether you’re a beer drinking, a white wine spritzer fanatic, or a hard liquor enthusiast, there is always something to drink at your 4th of July party.
Here are my six favorite recommendations for staying as lit as a firework this holiday season!
Twisted Tea
This “hard” alcoholic beverage comes in a tallboy sized can, much like a regular beer. However, this drink is a spin on a great summer beverage, kicked up a notch. The drink contains 5% alcohol, so you can put these down throughout the day and keep a great buzz going. Don’t drink too many though, because you’ll get too twisted and that’s never a good look.
White Claw Hard Seltzer
Seltzers are all the rage these days, so why not have a “hard” seltzer this 4th of July. This refreshing beverage will not only keep you refreshed, but it also has 5% alcohol and gluten free. It comes in three flavors (Ruby Grapefruit, Black Cherry, Natural Lime) and each of them will make you saying ‘YUM.’ You can put down the Lacroix and spice up your seltzer preferences.
White Wine Sangria

Who doesn’t love a good sangria? On July 4th you can spruce up your typical wine craving with a tasty sangria mix that is both colorful and delicious cocktail. Throw in some red and blue fruits (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries) and you have both a healthier and fresher option that will have less calories than hard liquor!
John Daly
Legendary professional golfer may also be known as a drunk, considering the man has a drink named after him. In a John Daly, you take what is essentially a lemonade and iced tea mix and throw in some vodka. I have had some incredible John Daly’s over the years (mostly found at college bars) and they certainly pack a punch. This definitely is a drink that will have all of your guests teeing off into the green.
American Punch
This one speaks for itself. Whether you use fruit punch, a combination of different fruit juices (pineapple, watermelon) some lemon lime soda, and some vodka (my go to is Titos), this one will have everyone on their butts shouting “the British are coming.” You can never go wrong with a good old fashion punch.
Classic Mule

I’ve been on a real Moscow Mule kick lately. Essentially you can throw together a big batch mule for your festivities. Vodka (again, use Tito’s), ginger beer, some fresh lime and you’re all set. You can change it from “Moscow” (boo Russia) to “Freedom” or “Independence” mule. Get festive with it.
All in all, these drinks will keep your guests happy and entertained amongst themselves, and feeling all sorts of independent thoughts. Alcohol is the bond that can both bring people together and also make for great stories down the road.
Remember, be safe and if you see someone who has had one too many drinks, call them an Uber or a Lyft. Don’t drink and drive.
