The holiday season is all sorts of fun.
For me, a huge part of the holiday cheer is the food! While I’m always looking to try new foods, I love festive food-related traditions, not only for the nostalgia that accompanies each holiday dish, but also because the food tastes pretty freaking awesome. Here are some desserts t you should try making this year. Maybe even think about taking one of these faves to your next holiday gathering!
Here are some simple holiday desserts that you should make sure to try this season:
1. Christmas Fruit Cake
This is definitely a seasonal cake for me – the marzipan-topped kind is my favourite. With red and green glazed cherries for decor, it’s also really pretty to look at. Holiday win-win!
2. Peppermint-frosted Cupcakes
OK, anything peppermint-flavoured is without a doubt, an edible embodiment of Christmas. However, I’m not going to lie to you, peppermint flavour doesn’t work with every dessert. I surprisingly love it on cupcakes, though… and you will, too!
3. Ginger Molasses Cookies
These cookies aren’t super “Christmassy” and are definitely a favourite all year round. Still, they’re a wonderful alternative to gingerbread cookies, especially when you’re tired of scarfing down gingerbread after (or during!) your gingerbread house-making contests.
4. Candy Cane Nutella Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows and Whipped Cream
This delicious drink is so simple to make and a great way to complete a cozy night in! Make regular hot chocolate using packaged powder (which you can purchase at any grocery store), and stir with a candy cane! Optionally, before you stir your hot cocoa, poke a jumbo, Nutella-dipped marshmallow onto the end of your candy cane for an epic hazelnut-chocolate-candy cane medley. Top it all of with some whipped cream and candy cane shavings – literally!
5. Biscuit Pudding
This dessert is a Sri Lankan holiday staple. Simply layer cookies, chocolate pudding, and icing in a baking tin. The end result? An easy, no-bake, tasty, cold dessert!
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or the commercialized winter joy that comes with December and New Year’s, there’s a holiday dessert that’s perfect for your festivities. I think we can all agree that the holiday season is an exciting time to enjoy time with loved ones, relax peacefully, and have fun. What better way to do all of that than with food?! Happy Holidays, everybody!
