9 Tips To Embrace Your Wanderlust As A College Student

To many of us, we consider our college days as a huge opportunity to explore new things in life. A usual part of a college student’s to-do list is to travel. But it’s not always easy to accomplish, especially if you’re financially challenged. But as they say, if there’s a will there’s a way. Simply follow these helpful tips and start saving some dollars for your planned escapade.

1. Break Your Saving Goal in Baby Steps

It’s not always easy to start cutting your expenses and jumpstarting your savings, but a good way to get it going is by at least taking the first step. Begin by tucking away a few dollars a day. Depending on the total amount you plan to save and the number of days you have remaining to meet your goal, you can save reasonable amounts that won’t really affect your daily spending.

2. Stick to Bare Necessities

Do you really need to buy a new pair of shoes or that new shade of lipstick? Before giving into your craving to impulse buy, try to consider how important your purchase will be. Is it something that you just can’t live without? Or is it something that you can do without? If you’re okay with not having it, or if after a few days you’ll eventually forget about it, you might as well not spend your money on it.

3. Cut Travel Costs

One great way to save travel costs is by taking advantage of discounted travel packages. A lot of travel agencies offer various discounted travel packages if you are going with a number of people. However, if you want to prepare your own itinerary, you should start booking tickets and hotels as early as you can. Avoid peak seasons and holidays because that is usually when flight and hotel costs are on a rise.

4. Try Overnight Money Maker Jobs

Do you feel like doing some manual labor for some extra bucks? Why not apply for overnight jobs? A lot of college students take on jobs during their off hours from school. So if you don’t have much to do with your time, you might as well start earning your travel money.

5. Reframe Every Dollar

Before deciding to spend your money on something, make sure that you consider the possibilities of where that amount of money can bring you. In many other countries, $20 could take you a long way. Before buying something unessential with the money that you have, reframe that cost  as to how do you think it could help you achieve your travel goals.

6. Avoid Eating Out

Eating out is not always cheap. Yes, it could be part of the immersive travel experience that you’re aiming for, but sometimes you have to weigh your options at first. Will it be worth it to buy that slice of pizza or cup of macchiato? Or is it better to keep that money and spend it for a more filling, less expensive meal that you can prepare at home?

7. Provide Online Tutoring

Another way to earn some extra money is by sharing your knowledge! If you know people who need help with their studies, you might want to offer a  tutoring service. You get to help out a person in need of some good grades and you get to earn money at the same time!

8. Blog About Your Travels

Do you have a knack for writing? Why not make use of your skills and share your travel experiences with the millions of travel blog readers on the internet. Many people who also love traveling enjoy reading travel blogs and  like to learn more about potential travel destinations before heading there. As a result, you can share some valuable details and photos about your trip by starting your own blog and become an online influencer.

9. Join Clubs

One way for you to experience traveling is by joining college clubs. Many clubs offer a variety of activities, including travel and tour perks, at discounted rates. Another advantage of this is that you get to meet new people and the travel planning will be off of your hands. So do your research in advance and find out which organization is best suited for you.

Becoming a better spender might take lots of practice, but if you have a goal in mind and you’re set on meeting it nothing is impossible. Make use of these money-making and saving tips, and sooner or later, you’ll be  on your way to your next big adventure.

  1. Thanks for the interesting advice, I liked some of the ideas, especially blogging or video blog while traveling, but you still need to find time for travel! But I have already started saving money and, by a few, build my route for traveling to Europe. For the most part, I will stay at Hostels and hope that I won’t spend too much money. But I will be traveling for about a month and will write down my video blog for YouTube. Let’s see what will be waiting for me ahead, wish me luck!

  2. One in four American borrowers is behind on their loan payments. And the worst part is that at first, it seems that monthly payments are super low and they do not have a negative impact on your overall financial situation.
