When Riverdale first premiered on The CW Network and Netflix, the series took the world by storm. Its dark and twisted plot always kept viewers at the edge of their seat. The mysteries were so in-depth and every time you though you figured it out, everything changed. You never really knew what was going to happen, and it was beyond exciting.
But lately, the plot-lines and overall quality of content being released every week (or three, because of the outrageous amount of breaks) has declined since season one and season two. The inconsistency of the genre is beginning to catch up with them and there have been too many changes to try and keep the show “interesting” that it’s just becoming difficult to watch.
In my humble opinion, here’s four reasons why Riverdale sucks now. Also, warning, there are spoilers. If you’re not caught up and this article gives some information away, don’t say I didn’t warn you:
Archie
After being in jail, it’s not too surprising that he would be a little disheveled. The fact that he basically cut off his friends, scrapped his passions, and took up a new hobby in fighting is getting weird. Everything we loved about the sensible leader is basically gone, and he seems like a lost puppy – except we don’t like it, and he needs to get his sh•t together ASAP.
The Relationships
First of all, Archie and Josie need to end immediately. Second, do the writers really need to push a relationship for Veronica and Reggie because they are dating IRL? It’s totally ruining the entire plot-line of the show and the dynamic. I’m sure Veronica will find her way back to Archie after Reggie does something to piss off her father, but it can’t happen soon enough.
G&G/The Gargoyle King
While I find this plot-line entertaining at times, particularly with the throwback episode of all the parents playing it as children, it drags on for so long and takes focus from other story-lines. Plus, how this mythical creature or game is still going strong and is able to destroy every person it touches is getting to be too much and unrealistic. Though, I do find it interesting that it is more than likely tied to the farm Betty’s family is affiliated with.
Too Many Story-lines For Individual Characters
You have the game G&G, the serpent’s drama, the return of Jughead’s mom (that’s ultimately in a story-line for Jughead and for the Lodge family), Archie’s fighting and new relationship with Josie, the farm, the destruction of Hiram’s empire, the sisters dismemberment, Hermione’s struggle in power, and Cheryl’s disastrous family and new gang. You can’t keep up! Every character has changed too much, and I don’t like how they are living as coexisting classmates in every episode. There’s no interaction, and it’s uncomfortable.
I will say, I am still thankful for Betty Cooper! The transformation her family experienced in the past season and a half, has her honestly remaining the only normal one. She’s holding the show together and is the only ounce of normal we have left.
All in all, the writers need to get their sh*t together, because this show is becoming too cringe-worthy and unwatchable. Yes, they redeemed themselves during the mid-season finale. It was engaging and gave us the answers and drama we needed; but since then, I’ve only been getting more physically uncomfortable watching every episode. But you know I’ll still be tuning in. I’m too invested and need to know what the heck is going on with the Gargoyle King and the farm.

I’ll let you & others be the ones to determine whether Season 4 is binge-worthy instead of potentially wasting my time staring at a screen confounded & utterly unamused as I did before I sadly was compelled to acknowledge its unfortunate, undeniable & obvious rapidly & drastically diminishing quality. I gave it a fair chance—surviving several successive episodes of Season 3 whilst sincerely hoping, pining, praying & pulling for the writers, actors & directors to return to the unparalleled & addictive entertainment value characterizing Season 1 & Season 2 (although to a lesser extent, especially the second half of Season 2). But I became far too bored & way too embarrassed (for them) to continue. Too little, too late for me to be the test dummy. I’d rather opt to read the online reviews mid-season to see if the show continues its decline or not prior to making my decision on whether to give it another go. Such a shame.
Hi there! I completely agree with you. It became too hard to watch and while the story line did have some great twists and turns no one saw coming, there was certain lines and pointless episodes. However, I did stick it out and can confirm there were still some great episodes that brought viewers back to the early seasons, especially the final two episodes of the season. Other than that it was very anti-climatic and very repetitive and as if they were trying too hard to appeal to a much younger audience. Overall I’ll probably still tune into season 4 just to see what this farm is all about because that was the only interesting story line of the show.
Totally agree!!! Although you forgot to mention the horrific musical episodes. This show has turned from enthralling and entertaining to horrifically cheesy!!! Literally the only reason I can somehow get myself to watch occasionally is KJ and just complete boredom. Has the show lost its original writers or have they simply run out of ideas. Either wrap it up and end the show or bring in some better writers. Geesh!!!!
I’m a guy which is basically different for a person writing a review. I grew up with Archie comics, been reading them since the 70’s. This show is ridiculous!!! Yes, I’m referring to seasons 1 and 2. It’s like a tragic accident waiting to happen.
1) No way Polly Cooper would have hooked up with a teenager and let him get her pregnant!!
2) Mr. Blossom would NOT murder his own son!
3) Josie is WHITE, sorry!! She is known for her red hair! Sorry if you think it’s racist to say this.
4) Fred Cooper is a fat, bald man. Not at all a Luke Perry type.
5) Mr Weatherbee is WHITE!! Again, not racist, just the facts.
6) Jughead Jones does not like Girls!!! Stupid that he would be in a relationship with Betty. He is more concerned about eating his hot dogs!! Speaking of Jughead, he would never be in a gang. So stupid!!
7) Moose Mason is NOT gay!!! No way, no how!!
8) Cheryl Blossom is not a lesbian!!!
9) Hal Cooper is NOT a serial killer!! Again, ridiculous!!
10) Midge Klump is not Asian!!
11) Veronica and her parents are not Hispanic!! Speaking of Veronica, can’t stand her!! Disrespectful to her parents, namely her father! She should have her butt kicked!! She does NOT have the authority to buy property!! (Chocolate Shop) She is a teenager!! The fact that she got a wad of money from Nick St. Clair’s parents is just not playing on reality. How did they meet with her? They gave a teenager thousands of dollars? No way!!!
People say how great the first two seasons are. Really? How do you figure that? Can’t wait to see the train wreck in future seasons!
Totally agreed with #11
Season one was good. Season two was alright in the beginning and it kind of became unwatchable after that. These are high school kids and they did everything but study. I pretty much remove it from my QUEUE.
Has anyone noticed that there is someone crying in EVERY EPISODE. Riverdale? More like “Cry me a river, Dale”.
