Many people love a good true crime podcast or TV show. In fact, so many of us love true crime that it makes the average person wonder… why the heck are we so interested in this?
Not to worry, it is totally normal. Mental Floss actually compiled an interesting list about why our society loves and is drawn to true crime. These reasons include our fascination with evil, the inability to look away from a train wreck, and enjoying good storytelling.
Without further ado, here are five incredibly binge-able true crime podcasts that will keep you on the edge of your seat and unable to “look” away.
1. Dr. Death
Dr. Death is hosted by Laura Beil and is about Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a confident (possibly cocky) neurosurgeon. He claimed he was the best in Dallas, but his patients developed a plethora of complications post-surgery. This podcast will make your jaw drop multiple times and wonder how the medical system could not stop this man sooner.
2. Man in the Window
Man in the Window is hosted by Paige St. John and is about a man who would eventually become one of the most famous serial killers in California. While it is easy to research this man by simply typing his name into Google, St. John investigates his trail of destruction through his victims’ eyes. This podcast will take you on an emotional rollercoaster as the victims tell their stories.
Listener warning: There are sensitive topics in these episodes so listen with discretion.
3. To Live and Die in L.A.
This podcast is hosted by Neil Strauss and is quite the rollercoaster as well. It takes the listeners back to February of 2018 when Adea Shebani was last seen and the events that unfolded afterward. The full story of her disappearance has never actually been told and is still a mystery. It is a strange and confusing ride to figure out just who was behind her disappearance, but it will keep you hooked the whole way through.
4. Crime Junkie
Would this even be a legit list of true crime podcasts if Crime Junkie wasn’t on it?! Every week, Ashley Flowers grips listeners with various tales of true crime – from serial killers to disappearances to murders. Some of these are solved and some of them aren’t. Every episode is sure to immediately catch the listener’s attention!
5. Root of Evil
Saving perhaps the most disturbing and deranged case for last, Root of Evil is about the death of the Black Dahlia, also known as Elizabeth Short. Moreover, this podcast is unique as the hosts, Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile, are actually the great-granddaughters of the suspect, Dr. George Hodel. This podcast includes sound bites from other family members to tell the Hodel family story and demonstrate how Dr. Hodel was truly the root of evil in their family.
Listener warning: There are extremely sensitive topics and graphic details in this podcast so please listen with caution.
While there are tons of true crime podcasts out there, these five will make you convince your friends to listen in. So, make sure to check that your doors are locked at night, and really wonder how these types of crimes are possible. After listening to these, you can definitely consider yourself a true crime junkie.
