What’s A “VSCO Girl”? Here’s What You Need To Know

With less than 2 months left of 2019, most of us know about the ‘VSCO girl’ trend happening right now. But if you’re like me, and not completely up to date on your trending news, you might not know what that term even means. But look no further! Here are several basic things about a VSCO girl (and how to be one if you want to jump on the bandwagon):

Let’s start with the basics: VSCO is a photo editing app.

VSCO is an app used to take and edit photos, that one can then use to post to their social media. This includes Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, as well as VSCO itself. In simple terms, it’s almost like another version of Instagram, where people share photos. The app is free, however, you can pay for a membership to have access to more filters and editing tools. This also opens you up to weekly photo contests and video editing abilities.

Like most social media, VSCO comes with the controversy surrounding it. One thing that makes it controversial is how the app is set up. When a user posts to the app, they can’t receive comments or likes on their photos. This concept is new for most social media platforms, created by the creators of VSCO to help combat “social fatigue.” This “fatigue” occurs when a social media user gets overwhelmed by likes, comments, and the perceived need to stay connected, so they take a break. Hence, VSCO aims to keep its users engaged without wearing them out. The second, and probably most widely known, the controversy surrounding the app is that it is female-dominated.

How is it female-dominated, and what’s a VSCO girl?

According to Lady-vor on Reddit, VSCO has no appeal to men, therefore it is sure to be mocked In the same thread, another user added that this trend is like any other thing women like, pumpkin spice, literature, TV series, etc, they will always be mocked. The conclusion that can be drawn from this is that VSCO is predominantly used by females, thus leading people to criticize the app and the people who use it. The term VSCO girl is used to describe girls who have a certain California/pacific style about them. They generally wear scrunchies, oversized t-shirts, and shoes such as Birkenstocks, Crocs, or Vans as a part of their daily wardrobe.

What do the things VSCO girls say mean anyway?

“Sksksk” is a common phrase used by girls who follow this trend. According to the Urban Dictionary, it is used “when people don’t know what to say, a form of showing enjoyment or laughter, or when they are shooketh.”

The second phrase commonly used by VSCO girls is “and I oop,” which is used when something or someone catches them off guard. This phrase is often used by VSCO girls if they drop their hydroflask or scrunchies on the ground.

How do I know a VSCO girl when I see one?

Girls who follow this trend own a multitude of stereotypical things that seem to practically come with their identity. One of the things VSCO girls are most known for owning is a hydroflask water bottle.

The girls are also well known for wearing shoe brands such as Crocs, Birkenstocks, or Vans out and about.

Polaroid cameras are also common among VSCO girls. They use them to take candid photos with friends and use the pictures as decorations.

Laptop stickers have become quite popular over the past year or so. Many people, both boys, and girls have them on their laptops to symbolize individuality and things they personally support. However, laptop stickers are highly popular within this community, too. One sticker they are commonly known to have is “save the turtles,” which is part of an initiative to stop the use of plastic straws.

As one can see, this trend is comprised of many different things, many of which were already popular before VSCO girls. However, these girls helped bring them back.
