We all dream of lasting love. But does an ideal relationship really exist? Here are five myths about “ideal” relationships and ways that you can really strengthen your relationship with your partner.
1. You should talk about problems as often as possible.
This is a popular belief, but it isn’t necessarily true. Of course you should talk with your partner about issues that you’re having in the relationship, but don’t let your thoughts turn into a rant. This way, you can avoid frustration on both ends!
2. Dating your “opposite” will lead to a lasting relationship.
Relationships thrive on common interests and values, so dating someone who’s completely unlike you may not end as well as you think it will. If you worry that dating someone who’s too similar to you will bore you, encourage each other to try new things. This way, you both can diversify your interests and expand your horizons.
3. Women are much more romantic than men.
Research shows that men can be just as romantic as women, but they may express their love differently. For instance, men might value physical touch and attraction over quality time, single men often search for these qualities on the best dating sites. So instead of believing that women must carry the relationship, learn how your partner expresses his love.
4. A perfect relationship has no conflict.
Conflict is normal and healthy in any relationship. After all, two people can’t always have the same point of view! On the contrary, couples who never argue feel less happy. Try to treat conflict as an opportunity to learn about your partner’s feelings, fears, problems, and needs.
5. Jealousy is a sign of true love.
Jealousy reflects self-doubt more than it expresses love. If jealousy frequently comes up in your relationship, then you may be on the verge of a relationship crisis and could benefit from seeing a couples’ therapist with your partner.
You may have wholeheartedly believed that many of these relationships are true, and they may have affected your relationships in the past. But now that you know the truth behind the myths, you can build a stronger, happier relationship with your partner.
Despite all the above conclusions, the most important, in our opinion, is the belief that ideal love relationships are possible and the desire to create them with your partner. All couples are different, and there is no set of rules for love. Don’t try to build perfect relationships – they don’t exist. Appreciate what you have and remember: flaws can be wonderful!
