Taking Classes During the Summer? Here’s How To Make the Most of It

Summer is approaching. The time for enjoying beach trips, sunshine, and making great memories. But for a number of us, myself included, summer may also be filled with college classes. Whether you are an undergrad or grad student, taking classes during the summer can be dreadful. You may ask yourself a number of questions. Why did I decide to take these classes? Why is this internship during the summer? Will I even have time to enjoy the summer? Even though you may have classes to take and papers to write, your summer doesn’t have to be all about school — there’s always room for having fun! Here are some ways to make the most of your summer despite your academic obligations.

1. Take some time for yourself.

Whether you choose to travel or just do a staycation, it’s important to take a break from your studies. It’s a good idea to take online classes because it gives you the flexibility to be anywhere and still log on and complete work. If you’re taking in-person classes, take advantage of those weekends when you have little work or those weeks between semesters. Take on a DIY project, go for a hike, visit the beach or a pool, or read a non-school related book to help make your summer more memorable.

2. Enjoy the sunshine.

If you have some work to complete, why not do it outside? Studies have shown that working — especially reading — in the sunshine can increase your mood. When you are in a good mood, you’ll retain the information better.

3. Meet up with family and friends.

Being in school shouldn’t result in neglecting your loved ones. Schedule some time to meet with your friends or see your family. Meet up for coffee or for a mini backyard get together.

4. Schedule your classes for early morning.

No one wants to be in class when the sun is shining and all you can think of is tanning and swimming. So to avoid that, schedule classes in a way that ensures you will be out before noon rolls around.

5. Stick to a schedule.

While it’s great to have fun, make sure that you don’t neglect your academic obligation. Keep a strict schedule that includes both study time and some time in the sun.

6. Take all your classes in one semester.

Colleges always separate the summer semesters into sections. To make the most of your summer, take all your classes in one semester instead of spreading them across the summer. You may have to spend a little bit more time studying, but it will be worth it.

Taking classes during the summer doesn’t have to mean the end of the world. There are ways to make the most of your summer despite your academic obligation. Are you taking classes this summer? What are you planning on doing this much awaited season? Let us know in the comments below!
