We are officially in The Handmaid’s Tale times. The supreme court officially overturned the historic Roe v. Wade verdict. Now, states decide whether you can consent to medical procedures for your body or not.
I am sad, livid, and wishing this wasn’t happening. Unfortunately, we live in a world where a young 33 year old woman like myself may or may not have access to an abortion if I needed one. Luckily, I live in a state that has legalized abortion. However, a lot of women live in states where it’s illegal. This could cause women to resort to unsafe practices that could put themselves and their unborn child at risk. I worry this devastating decision will make this the norm as women feel like they have no other options to turn to.
However, I think there are things we can do to protect women’s rights. In fact, there are several nonprofits out there ready and willing to protect women and their reproductive rights. If you have the means to do so, you can donate to these causes and help them rally behind women who need help. Or, we can donate the gift of time to help these organizations continue running.
Also, women like me who live in states where abortion is legal can offer help to our friends who may not have these same luxuries. That’s exactly what women who came before us, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, would want us to do — they would want us to channel our rage and keep pushing forward.
So, today and every day, I will continue to fight for my rights because it’s necessary.
To all the women out there who feel scared and angry right now, know that I am with you. Today we are angry as hell, but tomorrow we fight for a better future. We need to rise up and support each other more than ever because our freedom depends on it.
