The female body undergoes changes that can be less than comfortable or convenient. It’s especially true when you menstruate. But consuming the right foods, drinking plenty of water, and taking care of yourself can help you through this time and reduce the chances of losing your temper around those you love. So, here are a few tips for surviving Shark Week.
1. Watch what you eat
When you have your period, you want to find things that will comfort you and make you feel better. For example, having a tasty snack can momentarily take you away from the discomfort that you’re feeling. However, these can also make the pain you’re experiencing worse. If you want to know how to lose water weight and prevent bloating, avoid salty foods as much as you can. Plus, try limiting your sweets intake to avoid severe cramps. If the cravings for these items get too much, consider substituting these less-than-healthy choices for fruits and vegetables or reduce the portion that you intend to eat.
2. Keep yourself hydrated as much as possible
You may believe that restricting fluids the week of your period may prevent bloating. However, the opposite is true. Drinking plenty of water will reduce severe cramps and keep you from putting on extra weight. It will also energize and motivate you at a time you would rather sleep. What’s more, staying hydrated can ward away the acne and blemishes that appear on your skin by flushing out the toxins that cause it. If you struggle with consuming water regularly, consider substituting it with a sports drink or other beverages that contain electrolytes and additional minerals.
3. Find products that will soothe you
As you are experiencing PMS, you will want items that will reduce or eliminate the discomfort. So, be sure to have painkillers you can take when it becomes too much. You may want to consult your doctor about which product is best. Another idea for you to consider is a heating pad or hot water bottle. When you apply one to the part of your body that hurts the most, the warmth they give off will soothe the ache and help you feel better. You can also use are essential oils, or you can try stretching, walking, or yoga. You can experiment with a few of these until you find the one that works well for you.
4. Wear comfortable clothes
Wearing tight, restrictive clothing when you’re on your period can make you feel miserable. They press on the tender areas of your body when you want to be comfortable. So, on your period, select a few items in your wardrobe that are loose-fitting and fun to have on. Be sure that they coordinate with the season. If you tend to feel warm during shark week, you will want to have on something that is extra cool during the summer to prevent you from overheating. So choose a couple of pairs of simple underwear. As you analyze your clothes, be kind to yourself and prioritize your needs first instead of fashion.
5. Stock up and prepare
Make a trip to the store the week before you anticipate your period to begin. Stock up on the feminine products that you require to get through it. Find your heating pad or hot water bottle and set it someplace where you can find it when you need it. Put together a small package of pain relievers, pads, tampons, or other items that will come in handy when everything starts, and place it in your purse.
Shark Week can be an uncomfortable time each month for you. But being prepared and focusing on your care can help you through it.
