As the myth goes, Arachne was a skilled weaver. She was so talented that her tapestry astonished even the gods! So much so that Athena (the goddess of wisdom) challenged her to a web-spinning match, which Arachne won. Fuming, the goddess cursed Arachne by turning her into a spider.
The story of Arachne and Athena could be interpreted as a commentary on modern feminism and the state of female relationships across time. Since forever, intelligent and extraordinary people (especially women) have been the targets of jealousy and unacceptance. Unfortunately, many women have subjected other women to this as well.
This is an ode to a dream catcher
and everything it represents;
Innocence, a rising phoenix, maybe even a series of accidents.
The dream catcher sways chaotically in a patterned maze,
To the eyes, a prolonged daze,
Gleaming like dewy flowers under the morning sun,
A glare so bright one comes undone.
The threads of the spinning web glint like sunbeams,
A habitual echo of Arachne’s silent screams.
A dream catcher– living for the hope of it all,
Couldn’t save Arachne from her downfall.
Her moves rendered in a nostalgic dance,
As her descendants still spin out her penance,
But Alas! No amount of odes or verse
Will now undo the unfortunate curse.
This poem is a reminder of the fairytales and imagination that fill our childhoods with so much joy. In an ever-serious world full of horrors, it’s up to us to seek beauty wherever we can.
