Fat Tuesday, otherwise known as ‘Mardi Gras’ in French, is the day before Ash Wednesday. There are plenty of carnivals, especially in New Orleans, that mark Fat Tuesday. Still, if you’re looking to celebrate Fat Tuesday at home, feel free to do so. You can try out some of these four recipes below:
1. Banana Split Ice Cream
You can never go wrong with banana splits on Mardi Gras. This recipe is definitely an American classic. Plus, you can add a unique taste by combining it with your favorite ice cream.
Estimated length of time: 5 minutes.
What You Need:
- Any kind of ice cream
- Whipped cream
- One banana
- 2 tablespoons of diced strawberries
- 2 Maraschino cherries with stems
- 2 tablespoons of chopped peanuts
Steps:
- Slice the banana in half lengthwise.
- Place the two banana slices across from each other on a plate.
- Place 2-3 scoops of ice cream in between the two banana slices.
- Add whipped cream on top of the ice cream.
- Add diced strawberries and peanuts on top of the whipped cream.
- Add the two maraschino cherries and serve.
2. King Cake
This is a classic recipe for Mardi Gras — you’ll see it everywhere at festivals. The colorful icing tops it off.

What You Need:
- 2 cans of cinnamon rolls
- ½ cup of light brown sugar
- Blue, green, yellow, and purple sanding sugar
- Buttercream
Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Pop open the two cans of cinnamon rolls and place the cinnamon rolls in a circular shape.
- Press down the cinnamon rolls.
- Bake according to package instructions.
- Let cool once down.
- Add the melted buttercream, light brown sugar, and colored sanding sugar.
3. Mardi Gras Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
If you’re looking for a cool and chill dessert, fro-yo is always a good idea. You can definitely make this for your friends and family for Mardi Gras.
Estimated length of time: 2.5 hours.
What You Need:
- Greek Yogurt
- Honey
- Cocoa Powder
- Frozen Sliced Bananas
Steps:
- Cut up the bananas and place them in the freezer for 1-2 hours.
- After two hours, put the bananas, honey, yogurt, and cocoa powder in a heavy-duty blender.
- Blend until cream-like consistency.
- Put the fro-yo in a bowl and then serve.
4. Rainbow Pancakes
Mardi Gras is also known as Pancake Tuesday. So why not celebrate it by making some delicious pancakes?
Estimated length of time: 30 minutes
What You Need:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 ¼ cups of milk
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- Red, yellow, green, blue, and purple food coloring
- ¼ stick of butter
- Whipped cream
- Blueberries and strawberries
Steps:
- Put the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, egg, milk, and vegetable oil in a huge bowl and stir.
- Divide the bowl into five smaller sections and add different food coloring.
- Add vegetable oil and butter to the pan, ensuring to divide it evenly across the five different pancakes.
- Turn the heat on in the low to medium range.
- Once foaming, add the pancake batter.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes, and then flip the pancake.
- Repeat the previous steps for the other four pancake batters.
- Stack the pancakes on top of each other and add the whipped cream and fruit.
