Traditional is on the path to becoming antiquated, with only 22 percent of US weddings in churches in 2017 (compared to 41 percent in 2009). Most people want their wedding to be as memorable and unique as possible. But to accomplish this, you’ll need to find a wedding location differentiated from a church or similar traditional space.
Regardless of what vibe you want, there are a wide range of venue options for your non-traditional wedding.
1. A Rooftop Venue
If you like the idea of getting fresh air and sunshine, while simultaneously getting a great view of the city you love, consider getting married on a rooftop venue. Jennifer Smith, a wedding photographer from New York City, says, “I recently did a wedding at The Farm Rooftop and the lighting and backdrops made for spectacular photos for the bride and groom. On your wedding, you deserve to feel like you’re on top of the world… and nothing does that quite like a rooftop venue.”
2. A Museum
If you have a natural love of science, art, or history, you might be right at home getting married at a museum. Renting out a museum (or section of a museum) for a day, or even part of the day, could give your guests entertaining exhibits to explore – and make for some awesome pictures and videos.
3. A Brewery
Breweries are everywhere, and they’re typically affordable. They’re perfect if you want a combination of a cozy environment and ample food and drinks for your guests to enjoy.
4. A Mountaintop
If you and your partner are active and outdoorsy, you may consider getting married on top of a mountain. This option may not be viable if you have family members who struggle with the physical aspect of getting to the top of the mountain, but if you’re aiming for a small wedding anyway, it could be perfect.
5. A Greenhouse or Garden
Humans are naturally biophilic, but some of us obsess over flowers and other planets. If you attend a local greenhouse or garden, you might have the perfect backdrop for the natural wedding of your dreams.
6. A Historical Venue
Just because you want a non-traditional wedding venue doesn’t mean you have disdain for history. In fact, you might love the idea of tying the knot at a historical venue. A local castle, cathedral, or other preserved structure could be exactly what you’re looking for.
7. An Art Gallery
Similar to a museum, an art gallery can provide your guests with intellectually and creatively stimulating works of genius. As an added bonus, you can purchase a work of art to take home with you as a permanent reminder of this beautiful event.
8. A Theater
Theaters are often large, lavish, and regal – making them the perfect stage for your big event. You may even hold your wedding on the literal stage, which is brilliant if you or your partner participate in theatrical productions.
Religion is on the decline in the United States, but there are many people interested in getting married in a non-religious setting with an officiant of a specific religion.
It’s worth noting that any of these non-traditional settings could potentially become religious or spiritual with the right preparation and the right officials in attendance. Just because you’re not in a church doesn’t mean you can’t still use a minister or priest and follow somewhat traditional proceedings as part of your celebration.
Choosing a unique, non-traditional wedding venue has the potential to make your celebration unforgettable for everyone involved – and much more photogenic as well. Take your time, consider your options carefully, and make a deposit when you find the perfect place.
