The 13 Best Lyrics From ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’

speak-now-taylors-version

“Speak Now” was my first introduction to Taylor Swift, and the re-release proves why the album is so great. Here are some of the best lyrics from each song:

1. “Every time I look at you, it’s like the first time.” — Mine

Mine is a typical love story with trials and tribulations, and it has some of the most romantic lyrics. This line, in particular, never fails to make me swoon. Unconditional love is so important. And loving someone as time goes by and staying in that headspace is always wonderful.

2. “I’m captivated by you, baby, like a firework’s show.” — Sparks Fly

Another romantic banger shows up in Sparks Fly, along with a metaphor. This song captures the essence of a first crush and generally being mesmerized by your love interest.

3. “You gave me roses, and I left them there to die.” — Back to December

You may be someone or know someone convinced they ruined a good relationship by making mistakes. Can you make things right? Will this person ever forgive you, even if you can’t go back to the relationship you had? Rumination is a painful but relatable feeling, and Swift describes it beautifully here.

4. “You have pointed out my flaws again as if I don’t already see them.” — Mean

This is the anthem for the bullies and other toxic people who just need to shut up. We all have insecurities, but rubbing them in someone’s face is more than cold. People should look in the mirror before pointing fingers, and this song makes a striking point about that.

5.  “I’ve never heard silence quite this loud.” — The Story of Us

Not all breakups are peaceful. And that in itself is almost as bad as the relationship ending. Words can speak as loud as actions, and no words speak as loud as insults. You could definitely apply this lyric to every aspects of life.

6. “Please don’t be in love with someone else; please don’t have somebody waiting on you.” — Enchanted

This entire song, especially this line, embodies the first crush feeling so well. Sometimes we see a person, and we’re immediately wonderstruck (thanks, Taylor, for teaching me that word!). While the honeymoon phase can end, the feeling of pure love never does when it’s the right relationship.

7.  “Sophistication isn’t what you wear or who you know.” — Better Than Revenge

True sophistication is how you carry yourself and treat others, not how pretty you are or how many people are in your inner circle. If more people strived for this, the world would be a better place.

8. “Something keeps me holding onto nothing.” — Haunted

This line paints a perfect picture of a tenuous relationship. It captures the doomed relationship you’re still desperate to hang onto, even if there’s nothing left. We’ve all had or know someone who’s had a fragile relationship just waiting to break, making this hit particularly hard.

9. “I don’t know how to be something you miss.” — Last Kiss

It’s one thing to know a relationship is doomed, but an entirely different one to see it happen. The longing is painful, and something many of us are familiar with. But it’s okay to sit with emotions, no matter how painful they are. It’s how we move on.

10. “All I know is this could either break my heart or bring it back to life.” — Electric Touch

Aside from being catchy and starring Fall Out Boy, this song embodies the classic anxiety coming with entering a new relationship. It’s hard to know if it’s worth the risk, but how will you know unless you try?

11.  “I could see you make me want you even more.” — I Can See You

This sultry song is by far my favorite vault song. This line embodies desire and is unashamed about it. Seeing a woman openly embrace her desire makes the song sexier than it already is–we love to see that confidence!

12. “I held that grudge till it tore me apart.” — Castles Crumbling

Deeply regretting past mistakes is something too many of us know. But while this song is sad, this lyric shows you that there’s still hope. You don’t have to let grudges take over; instead, you can start anew. (And singing goddess Hayley Williams is on this track, so what more could you want?)

13. “Even in a different life, you still would’ve been mine.” — Timeless

Many of us want that timeless relationship, whether platonic or romantic. When you find it like this song describes, never let it go. Shout it out to the world and cherish that love forever.
