We all know how it works in university – you select a program, take many courses dedicated towards the program, and then, you have some space to select some elective courses. For some, choosing these elective courses seem like breathers–you know what interests you and want to choose the most efficient or easiest options. But what happens when you don’t know which courses to choose?
Fear not – you can choose several courses to gain more knowledge about the world. Here are five courses that will help you understand the world on a more global scale:
1. Economics
The common rumor amongst students who have taken economics is that the tests and assignments are difficult. While that may be true, studying economics allows students to understand the world better. Sure, they contain very theoretical and abstract concepts, but they can provide different perspectives. Economics enables students to understand why inflation happens, why some government regulations exist, and other burning questions you’ve had about the economic system. This prepares you for the future workforce when it comes to understanding the markets and applying the concepts.
2. Psychology
Psychology allows you to analyze and dig into human behavior. Moreover, psychology also encourages students to look into the scientific method and learn more about how to research and write different papers. You can also gain interpersonal skills throughout the class, as you’ll learn more about the importance of body language, communication, and nonverbal gestures. And this only helps you adapt to the workforce well when you graduate.
3. Communication
Although a communications course may sound vague, it can cover many helpful skills Some of these include verbal and non-verbal communication. By learning to communicate with others and different personalities, you’ll learn about different workplaces and explain your ideas succinctly. Moreover, you also learn how to present yourself in a professional manner.
4. Sociology
Sociology studies societies, cultures, values, customs, and their origin. Taking an introductory sociology course will teach you more about society’s norms, why people follow such norms, and the creation of norms. And this helps you reflect more on your own actions and beliefs.
5. Foreign Language
Foreign language courses are important as the world becomes more globalized. Having a knowledge of more foreign languages often leads to better job opportunities. But in order to master a foreign language, you’ll of course need to learn it. Post-secondary institutions offer you a great opportunity to learn about these languages and master such skills before graduation.
The next time you don’t know which elective to choose, consider these five-course options. You’ll never know what you end up learning, and you’ll never know when you’ll need to apply your coursework. After all, electives exist for students to learn more about other courses, as well as teach them how to give new concepts a try.
