Choosing a college or university can be both exciting and daunting. It’s a new chapter in life with endless possibilities. However, it’s also important to be mindful of the potential challenges that come with this new adventure. Some higher education institutions are more dangerous than others, especially when it comes to sexual assault. That’s why staying informed and engaged with the college community can help ensure a successful and fulfilling experience.
When choosing a new school, many of us don’t think about its reputation when it comes to sexual assault.
As we begin to talk more about incidents of campus sexual assault, parents of current or prospective college students may be concerned about the safety of these institutions and whether they are doing enough to address this issue. Both students and parents need to seek out colleges that prioritize safety and take concrete steps to prevent such events. It’s vital since some schools sweep such accusations under the rug and don’t address them as seriously as they should.
In today’s climate, many colleges and high schools choose to conceal and downplay incidents of sexual assault that occur on their premises. Even though they, make public statements condemning such behavior, they are being hypocritical behind closed doors. This growing problem often doesn’t give the attention it deserves from educational institutions and other governing bodies. This lack of transparency creates a culture in which schools prioritize their reputation over their students’ safety and well-being. This approach discourages potential students and their families from attending these institutions.
While it is necessary to consider the school’s academic strengths when making a decision, transparency regarding sexual assault and harassment should be a fundamental requirement.
What’s more, universities and other educational institutions should strive to hold the perpetrators responsible when assault does happen.
Addressing where and when sexual assault occurs, who is perpetrating these crimes, and what actions can be taken to prevent them from happening is instrumental when it comes to this problem.
Educational institutions must address sexual assault with urgency and take responsibility for their organizational procedures and oversight. They should validate survivors’ accounts and work towards building campus cultures that don’t tolerate sexual assault.
Reframing the history of sexual assault on campuses is critical to preventing these acts from happening in the future. All students should be able to stroll across their campus without being worried about sexual assault. That’s why colleges must take steps to address the prevalence of rape culture on their campuses, including setting clear definitions of consent, sexual battery, and sexual aggression. They have to communicate these definitions to their students, establish and enforce universal policies against all forms of sexual violence, and do whatever they can to ensure safe campuses.
Despite college administrators’ claims, about their commitment to student well-being and safety, many pressing issues still require attention. So, before you choose a higher education institution, do your homework and ensure it’s as safe as possible.
