As college students, we always remember the first summer internship we had. It probably was a memorableexperience filled with learning curves and unexpected events. Heck, we learned about ourselves more throughout that whole summer than anywhere else. After all, internships are supposedly a learning experience – at least colleges promote them that way.
But regardless, for me specifically, here are five lessons I learned:
1. Tutoring and customer service require different skills
At the beginning of my internship, I thought my communication skills were decent mainly due to tutoring. However, I then realized that tutoring and customer service are two different skill sets; one focuses more on developing a person’s knowledge, whereas the other focuses more on following procedures and ensuring guest satisfaction. I thought my communication skills from tutoring others could carry over, but I realized this is far from the truth. Throughout my day-to-day tasks, I notice that I struggle constantly with customer service, and it’s something that I plan to work on.
2. Trauma from past experiences do carry over
I haven’t had the best internship experience. My previous placement proved the case; I left feeling forlorn and exhausted about my future. Up to this day, I still witness feelings of resentment and trauma from the previous experience. I keep on asking myself; Am I doing things correctly? Are people hiding something from me? Although I plan on clearing my head from these thoughts, I can’t help it when I think about the past.
3. You need to be careful with fellow interns
Although your fellow interns can be classmates from your school or students from other universities, you need to realize that these other interns are not your friends. Every intern has a different agenda; they expect to gain a certain goal from the workplace. Therefore, when communicating with fellow interns, you need to stop yourself from sharing too much.
4. The job will get to you
Although many students think of internships as a glamorous experience, these thoughts are far from the truth. No matter which internship, the job will become draining and exhausting. You’ll often feel moments of burnout; it may seem super difficult to push through. But it’s part of the experience that teaches you how to manage your emotions. As soon as you finish your first internship, future internships will be better.
5. Start small, end off strong
You don’t want to burn yourself out from taking on too many tasks at first. Hence, it’s better to start small and learn the responsibilities and duties of the job. After a while, you can take on more tasks and initiative to create an everlasting impression in the office.
Internships are a stepping stone toward someone’s career and help students learn about workplace etiquette and professionalism. Throughout my internship, I learned more about myself than I ever thought. And I hope to carry that forward into my next internship.
