In order to live as a digital nomad, you need three things: a job you can perform from your computer, a laptop you can carry with you, and an Internet connection. Trust me, there is nothing better than knowing that you have the freedom to simply get up, get on a plane, and see the world.
But all this travel can be dangerous sometimes, which is why it’s incredibly important to consider these three things to stay safe while you roam the world as a digital nomad.
Do Your Homework
First and foremost, do your homework before you embark on a journey to faraway lands. Research what the weather is like, what to pack, and what to include in a proper travel itinerary.
In addition to the basics, be sure you’re aware of the country’s cultural climate. Is there any civil unrest there, like riots or even ongoing wars? Was there a recent natural disaster or disease outbreak? If you plan to travel to exotic countries, be certain that they are actually safe before you board the plane.
Read About The Culture
Also take time to read about the country’s culture before you plan your adventure. Learning social norms and some basic phrases in their language will help you avoid offending anyone. Blending in can help you make friends and keep you safe.
For example, a friend of mine ended up stuck in an awkward situation while she was in Japan. She tipped a waiter, but he embarrassedly and refused to take her money. Had she researched Japanese culture in advance, she would have known in Japan, people don’t tip.
Care For Your Equipment And Back-up Everything
Have you ever lost a digital project that you slaved over for countless hours? I have, and it’s not fun. When you’re on the road, almost anything can happen, though. People can steal items. You can damage your electronics. Even if your laptop seems OK on the surface, your journey may have scuffled it up. Imagine my surprise when I booted the old thing up and, lo and behold, a corrupted hard drive cost me days of work. Now, I save at least two digital versions of all of my files on the Cloud at all times. I also invested in a high-quality, waterproof, slash-resistant backpack.
Prepare Properly
Since it’s a standard travel rule, you probably already know this, but always carry your passport, lots of water, a granola bar, and extra cash. However, people often don’t consider some simple things that can actually ruin your travels.
For example, I don’t have the healthiest teeth out there, so I always carry a phone number and address of a good dentist. If you have similar needs, like chiropractic care, be sure to plan ahead and find someone to see in case you have to.
You should also invest in proper travel insurance. Accidents happen, and even though you’re travelling, you are working as well. Injuries can not only cost you money, but they can also take you away from your job. Furthermore, the last thing you need during your foreign expedition is a bureaucratic nightmare i Carry the right phone numbers with you at all times, and be sure to have a health and safety plan, should you require hospitalization or treatment while you travel.
I hope this advice will help you work from anywhere and stay safe on your journey. A digital nomad’s life is a lot of fun, but you can quickly get into trouble if you’re not careful. If you do your research, prepare properly, and plan for the worst-case scenario before it happens, you will be good to go.
Carry the right phone numbers with you at all times. If you’re travelling to Sydney, have the phone numbers of good NSW Compensation Lawyers with you, just in case.
