We all know that one older family member who insists they are “tech-savvy,” yet they clearly don’t understand social media. Their posts are in all caps, and they are gung-ho about adding unnecessary punctuation or pictures we can’t possibly make out. Often, they share TMI to its extreme. Oh, and they usually find a way to complain about something or throw in a “baby Jesus” or two as well. We cringe as we scroll through our news feeds, wondering when dear Aunt Mary will ever stop posting.
However, Millennials seem to actually enjoy the insanity that Boomers produce online. After all, the “Old People” subreddit has a following of over 800,000 people.
If that’s not good enough, then maybe this will be: There’s now a Facebook group specifically geared towards making fun of Boomers’ social media use.
The group, called “A group where we all pretend to be baby boomers,” follows this one simple protocol: Every post must be written like a Baby Boomer. The resulting threads are absolutely hilarious!
Perhaps this is finally the comeback Millennials were looking for? Many Boomers slam this generation for being frivolous, entitled, and lazy. Meanwhile, Millennials struggle to afford college tuition, housing, and other basic needs that many Baby Boomers take for granted. So, it only makes sense that each generation continues to sling mud at each other.
Dr. Elissa Perry of Columbia University says this Facebook group is a natural occurrence. “A very common reaction to stereotyping is the denigration of the other.” According to Perry, this appears to be a generational tit-for-tat.
Regardless of whether this group is merely for shits and giggles or a more serious jab at the man, you must admit these posts are funny.
Sign me up for this comedy train! I’m all in! Maybe it’s all fun and games. Or maybe it’s not, but I’m willing to take a chance just to add some humor to my depressing Millennial life.
