I haven’t always had the best of luck with roommates. Today, it seems like we’re always reminded not to room with our best friends because it will supposedly ruin the friendship. I honestly can say that living with my best friend is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Whether you’re entering your first year of college and deciding whether or not to room with your high school BFF, or you’re deciding if you want to sign that apartment lease with your college bestie, here are 7 reasons why the pros of living with your best friend outweigh the cons:
1. No need to invite them over; they’re already home.
You won’t have to go through the hassle of calling or texting your BFF to come over anymore. If you’re having a rough day, need a shoulder to cry on or just want some quality friend time, they’ll probably already be in the living room with a pint of ice cream and a good movie.
2. They motivate you to do well.
From taking out the trash to cleaning up your dirty dishes (as annoying as it may be), they encourage responsibility. If you said that you needed to go to class early in the morning and they see you aren’t up yet, they will make sure you get up, no matter what it takes. Literally. I once had a cat thrown on my face. Did I like it? No. Was it effective? Yes.
3. Endless food.
Your shelves just doubled. Most of the time the phrase, “what’s mine is yours,” comes into play. In which case, that means you can share and collaborate. Grocery shopping doesn’t feel like such a chore when you get to bring your best friend along. It helps to shop together to plan your meals and split the cost. This also means that you always have someone to eat dinner with.
4. More clothes to choose from.
Just like the shelves in your pantry, your closet doubled. You can try new outfits without spending money. Most of us are on a tight college budget and it’s nice to save a few dollars here and there. We save time, too, because on top of tests, papers, and the daily gym grind, it’s hard to find time to plan a shopping spree in college. And for the times when you can’t decide to wear, who better to ask than one of the people you trust the most?
5. They’ll stay in with you.
Sometimes you just don’t feel like going to a party or going out in general. When staying home just sounds better, it makes it even better to have your best friend there, too. Watching movies, doing homework, or even baking desserts at 10 o’clock at night can be more fun than a night making smalltalk with strangers and downing shots of overpriced tequila.
6. Doing chores
Doing chores alone is a drag, but not when you have Beyonce on blast and your best friend to help you out! Suddenly, the dishes don’t feel like so much work when you get to goof off with your best friend the whole time. And It goes by a lot quicker.
7. Being with each other.
Being within a couple of steps from each other is convenient when you just want to gossip, or plan your future wedding, or just lay around. Those silent moments being in each other’s company are some of the best.
If you have the opportunity to live with your best friend, do it! Ignore the people that say you shouldn’t, because it’s much more fun to have your best friend by your side instead of a random. You will be thankful for those days you two stayed in and made memories – trust me.
