When we were kids, we couldn’t wait to grow up. Adults seemed to know everything, and we looked forward to a glamorous life of no rules and late bedtimes. However, the true sign of becoming an adult is that you no longer want to be one.
Here’s how you know that you’re on the struggle bus on direct route to the difficult world of adulting:
1. You find yourself thinking, “I’m starting to sound like my mother.”
Enough said.
2. Going to bed early is actually a treat.
Those days of whining, “But mom, it’s too early to get to bed,” as you proceed to pull out video games or a book as soon as she shuts the door are long gone. When you’re a true adult, you’re out before anyone can shut off your light (and you have to shut it off yourself).
3. Eating healthy food makes you feel great.
Moaning and complaining about finishing your broccoli is a problem of the past. Now, you actively attempt to prepare healthy meals. Note the word attempt. Pizza’s healthy, too, right?
4. You visit the grocery store more frequently than the mall.
When you were a teen, the mall was your prime hangout spot. Not anymore, though! Now, you and your friends congregate in the cereal aisle once per week.
5. You celebrate low gas prices.
Once upon a time, gas prices were none of your concern. In your adult life, though, you feel elated when gas prices drop a few cents. After all, that means that you have enough room in your budget to purchase a soda and a candy bar at the gas station.
6. Checking your bank account is your greatest fear.
Rent, car insurance, electricity and the cellphone bill—they are all your responsibility. Somehow they magically leave your bank account empty well before the end of the month. Poof!
7. You watch the morning news religiously.
How did we ever live without being “in the know” on the latest politics, natural disasters, and impending wars?
8. You dread birthdays.
Getting older used to be exciting. On your 16th birthday, you couldn’t wait to turn 18. When you finally turned 18, you anticipated your wild 21st. But these days, birthdays just leave you yearning to feel carefree and 13 again.
9. Weekends at home feel like a luxurious vacation.
The couch is your five-star hotel, and that bucket of popcorn is your complimentary room service.
10. You realize how much work your parents put into laundry, dishes, and a full-time job.
The chores your parents assigned to you did not prepare you for the disaster that is housekeeping. You cringe as you fold your favorite pair of jeans with that fashionable bleach stain you accidentally made.
11. You regret not taking advantage of naptime as an adult.
You wonder if your boss would be mad if you scheduled a nap before your lunch break… then you take a nap anyway.
If you look past the bills, no nap time, and a plethora of stressful responsibilities, becoming an adult isn’t all bad. It’s inevitable, so you might as well embrace it!
