For my entire life, people have called me “overly emotional,” “overly sensitive,” and “overly dramatic.” Being so emotional is my biggest curse, but it’s also my biggest strength. I don’t know why I am the way I am, but my emotion is a huge part of who I am. I cry often, and I take everything to heart. Also, I care deeply about what other people think. But the good news is that I’m not alone in my feelings. If you’re also an emotional person, here’s why your ability to feel so deeply is a gift for you to appreciate.
You naturally draw people into you, and they tell you their deepest secrets. You can hold the most vulnerable parts of other people’s pasts — addiction, trauma, and life-changing decisions — and keep them safe. And not only can others tell you anything, but no matter who they are, you can also empathize with them. You try to be cold and hard, but you can’t, so please stay gentle. There’s something so magical about your ability to connect with others.
If someone tells you a sad story, you’ll cry with them. When someone else is hurt, you feel their pain. Because you’re in tune with your emotions and not afraid to express them, you have the ability to feel and see what others don’t. Feeling so deeply can be painful, but because you feel absolutely everything, you can also provide so much comfort to those who need it.
Other people easily hurt your feelings, and your mood often depends on the energy around you. If you’re highly emotional, you might over-analyze what others say and how they say it, but the truth is that there’s nothing wrong with wanting to understand how other people feel. Noticing the slightest changes in others might exhaust you, but it also means that you can easily find the people you genuinely want to be around.
If you ever feel like you’re “too emotional,” don’t ever change who you are. Stay gentle, empathetic, and compassionate. And know that I see you, I know you, and I love you just as you are because your ability to feel so deeply is amazing.
