Okay, let’s talk summer vacation. I don’t have time to invest in a new relationship when there are so many amazing life opportunities to take advantage of. I’m talking travel, friendships, future careers to worry about, and old pals to catch up with. Now is not the time to pour hours into a potential relationship with someone when you know you’ll be back off at school/real life in a matter of months!
It does hurt to come to terms with the fact that I might not find my future life partner this season, once I chose “summer fling.” On the bright side, I stopped worrying about who I had to impress, who to flirt with, and how I should spend my time. And this is what it taught me.
Live in the present
The key factor in a summer fling is living in the moment. Call it carpe diem, YOLO, whatever you will. Being a millennial is about accepting the present moment, without worrying about stubborn exes or future lovers. If you keep your head in the game, and make choices based on what YOU truly want, worrying about the past and future are no longer heavy burdens and you can focus not on finding a lasting connection. Rather, it’s on blissful moments you can enjoy right now, as ephemeral as they may be.
Enjoy moments of bliss
I’m not saying to give up on relationships completely, or that it’s not okay to settle down. But I’ve found it immensely comforting to know that romance doesn’t have to be serious or even long-term. Happiness, love, good times – those feelings can be momentary. There’s nothing wrong with seeking pleasure in the short term.
Sun’s out guns out
The summer is an especially good time to find a fling – somehow, be it the warm weather, the carefree attitudes, during this easygoing time of year the sun makes for some hot romances (pun intended) and some beautiful moments (wink wink).
Keep moving forward
But isn’t that exactly what the twenty-something years are for? Experience as much as you can while keeping your head up. Fall in and out of love. You’ll have moments of pain but also moments of sheer joy and these will make all the leaps you take worthwhile. Don’t linger on failed relationships, and definitely don’t fall into the rut of “no one will ever love me.”
Go forth and take advantage of all the world has to offer! Find love and happiness where you can and never forget; it’s okay to make mistakes, that’s what being young is all about!
