Before getting hooked on any kind of drug, including kratom, you’re safer when you first familiarize yourself with all the facts and myths surrounding it.
Although it’s a legal drug, kratom does cause problems when the users fail to handle it correctly. Here are four common myths that have triggered a wave of confusion, especially among first-time users:
1. Kratom is safe because it’s herbal.
Most users think that kratom is safe to use because it is herbal. This is why the plant has gained popularity as a treatment for opioid withdrawals and chronic pain.
Although natural kratom is herbal, people who use the plant recklessly may encounter harmful effects. In fact, people may experience extreme mood swings, chills, nausea, and even seizures. Furthermore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet regulated kratom despite its classification as a supplement. Because of this, some government officials are pushing for a kratom ban in the United States.
2. It’s illegal in the United States.
As I mentioned, many people are pushing for a ban on kratom. However, the plant is currently not illegal in the United States, though some individual states have banned its use.
Regardless, the substance has gained popularity in recent years. The Drug Enforcement Association (DEA) currently feels torn because they cannot punish people for recklessly using the substance since it is not yet fully banned.
On the brighter side, the plant has a long list of health benefits, especially when you consciously and reasonably use it. Those who have used it describe it as a perfect mood enhancer and that it also relieves pain.
3. Kratom comes in different strains.
All kratom trees produce the same plant, regardless if it looks green, red, or white. These differences in colors don’t come from different variations of the plant, but rather from the alkaloids the plant contains. During the harvesting period, these alkaloids can cause strange color changes with the plant. This explains the different variations people see.
However, variations can occur depending on what happens after harvest. For example, fermentation can increase the alkaloid levels within the substance, and different drying techniques can make the plant’s effects stronger.
4. It only exists as a powder.
Since powder is the most common form of kratom, many people believe it’s the only way the substance comes. Believe it or not, it comes in many forms for users to choose from. Aside from the well-known powder form, you can find capsules or dried forms, which you can brew as a tea. The rarest form is kratom soap, which users enjoy during a calming bath.
Before you use kratom for the first time, you should research the facts. This way, you won’t experience the harmful effects that come along with it.
