Going to the movies or seeing a play used to be a huge event. It was so much of a big deal that my family would plan a whole day around it. We would often go to dinner before or after, dress up, bring friends, and so much more. Going to the movies has and always will be a big part of my life.
I recently watched Black Widow on Disney+ with my wife and a buddy because I’m not 100% ready to return to the movie theater just yet. I had a lot of fun, but it just wasn’t the same. When you see a highly anticipated movie like Black Widow in the theatre, you’re usually joined by a large group of people equally as excited as you are. It’s either a good or bad thing depending on the group.
Often, if you have a decent crowd, they’ll react to the events in the movie the same way you will, such as a scream, laugh, or cry. Essentially, you’ll be seeing a movie with some of your best friends. On the other hand, bad crowds tend to talk during the movie, answer phone calls, etc. Of course, these people will instantly repel you and any friends and family they have left. But that’s not exactly the point.
No matter what, it’s always worth seeing a movie during its theatrical release.
Don’t get me wrong: Streaming services are extremely convenient and easy to navigate. But they charge the same — sometimes even more — than the movie theater, depending on your area. What’s more, the experience is second to none. Some of my fondest memories are from movies I saw in the theater with friends and a crowd that wanted to see the movie alongside like-minded people. I remember cheering like a madman during the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. I also remember laughing and crying during Avengers: Endgame and having a kind lady pass me over some kleenexes.
At the end of the day, it’s all about the experience. People often rave about how they or their friends reacted to a particular scene in the movie. Or what they were thinking during that crucial scene. Seeing something for the first time without spoilers is one of those unique treasures too! The movies are something else, and I can’t wait to go to the movies again and have those experiences again.
