If you asked me today (yes, as a 24-year-old), “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, I would look you straight in the eye and say, “Mindy Kaling, of course.”
Who wouldn’t want to be her? She’s hilarious, badass, and understands that there is no problem that McDonald’s fries can’t solve. And if I can’t actually be her, I’d at least settle for being her BFF. Because she gets us, girls. If this article was People Magazine, I would even go so far as to tell you that “she’s just like us!”

1. “If someone wants to see you, they always find a way. Always.”
Yep, that totally includes the guy you’ve been pining over for weeks who keeps ghosting you. He didn’t lose his phone, he wasn’t asleep…he just doesn’t care! Move on. We have to stop giving guys second and third (and ok, sometimes fourth) chances. Stop making excuses for him! If he cares, he will show up.
2. “Confidence is like respect, you have to earn it.”
You can fake it until you make it all you want, but eventually you have to put in the real work. Give yourself a reason to be confident, whether it’s that promotion you got last week at the office or the article you finally got published.
3. “I wear Keds to every meeting and then go to the restroom and change into my ‘slutty career woman’ stilettos before I actually see anyone important.”
Every woman should know the value of commuter shoes because no matter how tough or glamorous or cool you are, walking more than a block in 6 inch heels will break you. But more importantly, where can I find a good pair of ‘slutty career woman’ stilettos??
4. “People don’t say ‘Give me your honest opinion’ because they want an honest opinion. They say it because it’s rude to say “Please tell me I’m amazing.”
This also applies to selfies or anything posted on Instagram for that matter. Sometimes we just need a little validation and that’s fine. If there are any men reading this, please pay specific attention to this. When we ask how we look, the answer better be nothing short of phenomenal.
5. “There are not many relationships more powerful than that of two women who fall fast and deep into a friendship.”
You know that old adage your grandma used to say? Chicks before dicks. Oayy, maybe not. But that’s what she meant when she said boys may come and go but girlfriends are forever. Love your friends because no man can ever replace what you have with them. I love my boyfriend as much as anyone, but there’s just something special about eating ice cream on the couch with my best girl friend in sweats crying because we’re on the same cycle.
6. “I can’t for the life of me not eat something I want to eat.”
AMEN. This really doesn’t even need any explanation. Just another AMEN.
Basically Mindy is every woman’s dream best friend. She’s the one we want to share all our secrets with over a glass (or two, or three) of wine, the one we want to have Friday night dance parties with in our sweatpants and the one we want to take shopping so that when we ask “Does this make me look fat?” she will shut us up with donuts and a girl power pep talk. We love Mindy for all of that, for all of her humor and quirkiness, for all of her awesomeness. And most of all, we love her for totally getting what it is like to be a woman in today’s world.
