Yesterday, I served a couples table who has been married for 52 years.
52 years.
I could not hide my reaction, and they could see how shocked and happy I was by hearing how long they were married for.
Marriages don’t last that long anymore. I mean, of course, we see the lucky few who do, but many end up divorced.
The couple agreed with me and said even their own kids couldn’t stay in a marriage with their spouses.
I always ask questions when a couple tells me they have been married for over 50 years. I want that to be me one day, and maybe, their advice can help me achieve that goal. I have always been old-fashioned when it comes to relationships. While a lot of my friends were having sex in high school, I wasn’t. While my friends hooked up with people at bars, I would be going home alone. That is just who I have always been. I want to be with someone who I can truly see myself with forever, and not just for one night.
I find many people who think if you’re meant to be with someone, the relationship will come easy. This is so wrong! First of all, fighting is completely normal, and having issues is normal. What ends a relationship and marriage is giving up.
When I gave this older couple their food, they told me the reason why people don’t last anymore is because they don’t work on their relationship. They don’t give it their all, they give up, and eventually file for divorce.
It hasn’t been easy for this couple. Of course, they have dealt with their battles. But, at the end of the day, they keep working on their marriage, they say “I love you”, and pick and choose what to fight about.
Did you know divorce rates are at an all time high with only 50% of marriages lasting? How crazy, and sad is that? Maybe our generation can change this percentage by making sure the person you’re marrying is the one you’ll spend the rest of your life with. This fact proves we need to think before we act!
If you are in a relationship, or if you are married, don’t give up. Clearly, you two love each other. Keep on working at it, and you two will be okay. Hold on, and move forward, together.
